How to change the menu bar color on a Mac (macOS Tahoe and macOS 27)

System Settings has no color picker for the menu bar. Most ways to change its color edit or replace your wallpaper; one makes the menu bar black and leaves the wallpaper alone, on macOS 26 and macOS 27. Here is each option, with what it costs.

Quick answer

You cannot pick a menu bar color in System Settings on macOS 26 Tahoe or macOS 27; the bar shows the top of your wallpaper. For a black bar, Black Menu Bar ($0.99) makes the menu bar solid black without touching your wallpaper — no replacing, repainting or copying it, so dynamic, shuffling and per-Space wallpapers keep working — and it works on macOS 26 and macOS 27. The built-in options only change how much of the wallpaper shows: Show menu bar background (System Settings → Menu Bar) adds Apple's translucent bar, and Reduce transparency (Accessibility → Display) makes the bar and the rest of the interface opaque.

Why there is no menu bar color setting

For years the Mac menu bar has been translucent and tinted by the wallpaper behind it. macOS 26 Tahoe went further and removed the background entirely by default: menu titles and icons sit straight on top of the wallpaper. macOS 27 Golden Gate keeps that design. The color you see is the color of the top edge of your wallpaper.

Dark Mode does not change this. It recolors windows, menus and controls, but a transparent menu bar still shows the wallpaper, so a light wallpaper gives a light bar in Dark Mode too.

The built-in switches: background and transparency

Show menu bar background is the switch Apple added to macOS 26 for people who missed the bar. Open System Settings → Menu Bar (scroll the sidebar if you do not see it) and turn it on. You get a translucent bar drawn by macOS, so the color is Apple's and you cannot pick it. The same switch is there in macOS 27.

Reduce transparency lives in System Settings → Accessibility → Display. Apple describes it as replacing the transparent effect on backgrounds with a solid one to improve contrast. It makes the menu bar opaque, and it does the same to the Dock, Control Center and other panels across the system.

macOS Tahoe menu bar transparent? Bring the background back

What Show menu bar background does in macOS 26 and 27, and how it differs from Reduce transparency.

Any color: paint it into the wallpaper

Because the transparent menu bar shows the top of the wallpaper, a wallpaper with a solid band along the top edge gives you a menu bar in that color. Make the band a little taller than the menu bar. A plain color from the Colors section of System Settings → Wallpaper is the one-click version; it colors the whole desktop, not just the bar.

Doing this by hand breaks down with dynamic wallpapers, shuffling collections, several Spaces or several displays, because each one needs its own edited picture. Wallpaper apps automate it by generating the edited copy for you.

A black menu bar that leaves your wallpaper alone, on macOS 27

Every way above to get a real color goes through the wallpaper: you edit it by hand, or an app replaces it with a generated copy. Reduce transparency changes the whole interface instead. For a solid black menu bar — with a MacBook camera housing that disappears into it — Black Menu Bar does it without any of that.

It never touches your wallpaper: no replacing, no repainting, no copying. Your dynamic wallpaper keeps changing, your shuffling collection keeps shuffling, and each Space keeps its own picture. It works on macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27 Golden Gate, leaves System Settings and accessibility options alone, and has one switch: turn it off or quit the app and the menu bar is back to normal, with nothing to restore.

FAQ

How do I make the menu bar black without changing my wallpaper?

Use Black Menu Bar. It makes the menu bar solid black and never touches your wallpaper — no replacing, repainting or copying it — so dynamic, shuffling and per-Space wallpapers keep working. It works on macOS 26 and macOS 27.

Can you change the menu bar color on a Mac?

Not with a setting. macOS 26 and 27 have no color picker for the menu bar; the bar shows the top of your wallpaper. You can edit the top of your wallpaper by hand or with a wallpaper app, or use Black Menu Bar, which makes the menu bar black without touching the wallpaper.

How do I change the menu bar color in macOS Tahoe?

Tahoe offers two switches and no color choice: System Settings → Menu Bar → Show menu bar background adds Apple's translucent bar, and System Settings → Accessibility → Display → Reduce transparency makes the bar and the rest of the interface opaque. For black, Black Menu Bar does it without touching your wallpaper, on macOS 26 and macOS 27.

Why did my menu bar turn gray?

Usually because Reduce transparency is on in System Settings → Accessibility → Display, which replaces the transparent menu bar with an opaque system background. Show menu bar background in System Settings → Menu Bar also adds a bar of its own. Turn the one you did not want back off. For a solid black menu bar instead, Black Menu Bar does it without touching your wallpaper, on macOS 26 and macOS 27.

Does Dark Mode make the menu bar dark?

Not in macOS 26 or 27 with the default transparent menu bar. Dark Mode recolors windows, menus and controls, but the menu bar still shows the top of your wallpaper. A dark wallpaper, or Black Menu Bar, is what makes the bar dark.
