Quick answer
You cannot set the menu bar text color directly on a Mac. The text color is chosen by macOS from the brightness of the wallpaper behind the menu bar: a dark top edge gets white text, a light one gets black text, and Dark Mode does not decide it. To change it, change what is at the top of your wallpaper — a dark band for white text, a light band for black text. If what you want is a black menu bar, Black Menu Bar ($0.99) makes the menu bar solid black on macOS 26 and macOS 27 without touching your wallpaper — no replacing, repainting or copying it — so dynamic, shuffling and per-Space wallpapers keep working.
How macOS chooses the text color
In macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27 the menu bar has no background by default, so the menu titles and status icons sit straight on your wallpaper. macOS keeps them readable by switching between light and dark text based on how bright the wallpaper is behind the bar.
That is why the result can surprise you. With Dark Mode on and a light wallpaper, the menu bar text turns black. With Light Mode and a dark wallpaper, it turns white. A wallpaper that is light on one side and dark on the other, or a dynamic wallpaper that changes during the day, changes the text along with it.
What changes the text color, and what does not
| What you change | Effect on the menu bar text |
|---|---|
| The wallpaper, or just its top edge | Changes it: dark top edge, white text; light top edge, black text |
| Dark Mode or Light Mode | Does not decide it while the menu bar is transparent |
| Accessibility → Display → Menu bar size | Not the color, but sets the menu bar text to Large; some apps need a log out to pick it up |
How to get white menu bar text
- 1
Use a wallpaper that is dark along the top. A dark solid color from the Colors section of System Settings → Wallpaper works in one click. For a photo you like, darken or paint a band across the top in an image editor and set the edited copy as your wallpaper.
- 2
Make the band at least as tall as the menu bar. If the band is shorter, part of the menu bar still sits over the picture underneath it.
How to get black menu bar text
The same in reverse: a wallpaper that is light along the top. A white or light-gray band painted into the wallpaper, or a light solid color, gets you black text on a light bar.
A black menu bar that keeps your wallpaper, on macOS 26 and 27
Every way above to change how the menu bar looks goes through the wallpaper: you edit it by hand, or an app replaces it with an edited copy. If the look you are after is a black menu bar, Black Menu Bar does it without touching the wallpaper at all — no replacing, no repainting, no copying. Your dynamic wallpaper keeps changing, your shuffling collection keeps shuffling, and each Space keeps its own picture.
It works on macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27 Golden Gate. There is one setting, an on/off switch in its menu bar menu; quit the app and the menu bar is back to normal, with nothing to restore. It costs $0.99 once on the Mac App Store.

FAQ
Can I change the menu bar text color on a Mac?
Not directly — there is no setting for it. macOS picks white or black text from the brightness of the wallpaper behind the menu bar. Make the top of your wallpaper dark for white text or light for black text. For a solid black menu bar, Black Menu Bar does it without touching your wallpaper, on macOS 26 and macOS 27.
Why is my Mac menu bar text black in Dark Mode?
Because your wallpaper is light behind the menu bar. In macOS 26 and 27 the menu bar is transparent by default, and macOS picks the text color from the wallpaper, not from Dark Mode. A darker wallpaper, or one with a dark band along the top, turns the text white. For a solid black menu bar, Black Menu Bar does it without touching your wallpaper, on macOS 26 and macOS 27.
Why is my Mac menu bar white in Dark Mode?
The menu bar has no background of its own by default in macOS 26 and 27, so it shows the top of your wallpaper. If that part of the wallpaper is white or light, the bar looks white in any mode. Use a wallpaper that is dark along the top; that also turns the menu text white. For a solid black bar, Black Menu Bar does it without touching your wallpaper, on macOS 26 and macOS 27.
Why is my menu bar black on my Mac?
Usually one of two things: the top of your wallpaper is black and the transparent menu bar shows it, or you are in a full-screen app on a MacBook with a camera housing, where macOS keeps the top strip black.
Can I get a black menu bar without editing my wallpaper?
Yes. Black Menu Bar makes the menu bar solid black and never touches your wallpaper — no replacing, repainting or copying it — so dynamic, shuffling and per-Space wallpapers keep working. It works on macOS 26 and macOS 27.
