Quick answer
The menu bar in macOS 26 Tahoe is transparent by default, and macOS 27 keeps it that way. For a solid black bar, Black Menu Bar ($0.99) works on macOS 26 and macOS 27 and never touches your wallpaper — no replacing, repainting or copying it, so dynamic, shuffling and per-Space wallpapers keep working. To get Apple's own background back, open System Settings → Menu Bar and turn on Show menu bar background: macOS then draws a translucent bar behind the menu items. For a fully opaque bar, turn on Reduce transparency in System Settings → Accessibility → Display, which also makes the Dock, Control Center and other panels opaque.
Why the menu bar is transparent in macOS 26 and 27
macOS 26 Tahoe redesigned the interface around Liquid Glass and dropped the menu bar's background: menu titles and status icons sit directly on top of the wallpaper. On a busy or light picture the titles can get hard to read, and on a MacBook the camera housing stands out against the wallpaper beside it.
Apple added the Show menu bar background switch during the macOS 26 beta, and it is still there in macOS 27 Golden Gate. It is off by default, so a transparent menu bar after an upgrade is the expected look, not a bug.
Turn on Show menu bar background
- 1
Open System Settings. Choose Apple menu → System Settings.
- 2
Click Menu Bar in the sidebar. Scroll the sidebar down if you do not see it.
- 3
Turn on Show menu bar background. macOS draws its own translucent bar behind the menu items. There is no setting for its color or opacity. Turn the switch off to go back to the transparent menu bar.

Need it fully opaque? Reduce transparency
System Settings → Accessibility → Display → Reduce transparency replaces the transparent effect on backgrounds with a solid one, in Apple's words to improve contrast. The menu bar becomes opaque, and so do the Dock, Control Center and other panels across the whole system. It is the broadest built-in setting: you cannot apply it to the menu bar alone.
Liquid Glass itself has its own control in System Settings → Appearance: Clear or Tinted in macOS 26, and a slider from clear to the heaviest tint in macOS 27. It changes the look of glass elements across the system; it is not a menu bar background switch.

A solid black menu bar on macOS 26 and 27 that leaves your wallpaper alone
Apple's two answers to the transparent menu bar are a translucent bar you cannot color and an opacity switch for the whole interface. The usual third answer, painting a band into the top of the wallpaper, means editing or replacing your wallpaper. Black Menu Bar takes none of these routes.
It works on macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27 Golden Gate, and it never touches your wallpaper: no replacing, no repainting, no copying. It makes the menu bar solid black, dynamic wallpapers keep changing, shuffling collections keep shuffling, and each Space keeps its own picture. On a MacBook the camera housing blends into the black bar. System Settings and accessibility options stay as they are. One on/off switch in its menu bar menu turns it on or off; quit it and the transparent menu bar is back.
FAQ
Why is my menu bar transparent in macOS Tahoe?
Because macOS 26 Tahoe removed the menu bar's background by default as part of the Liquid Glass design; macOS 27 keeps it. Turn on System Settings → Menu Bar → Show menu bar background to get a translucent bar back, or Reduce transparency in Accessibility → Display for an opaque one. For a solid black bar, Black Menu Bar does it without touching your wallpaper, on macOS 26 and macOS 27.
Where is the Show menu bar background setting?
In System Settings → Menu Bar. Open System Settings from the Apple menu and click Menu Bar in the sidebar; you may need to scroll the sidebar down. The switch is there on both macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27. For a solid black menu bar, Black Menu Bar does it without touching your wallpaper, on macOS 26 and macOS 27.
How do I make the menu bar solid on macOS 26 or macOS 27?
For a solid black bar, use Black Menu Bar: it works on macOS 26 and macOS 27 and never touches your wallpaper — no replacing, repainting or copying it — so dynamic, shuffling and per-Space wallpapers keep working. Built in, Show menu bar background in System Settings → Menu Bar gives a translucent bar, and Reduce transparency in System Settings → Accessibility → Display makes the bar and the rest of the interface opaque.
Can I choose the color of the menu bar background?
macOS offers two system backgrounds: Show menu bar background and Reduce transparency, neither with a color choice. For a solid black bar, Black Menu Bar does it without touching your wallpaper.
