How to turn off Liquid Glass on a Mac (macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27)

Apple gives you no single switch to turn Liquid Glass off. It gives you three settings that each take some of it away — here is what each one does on macOS 26 and 27, and how to make the menu bar solid black on macOS 27 without touching your wallpaper.

Quick answer

You cannot switch Liquid Glass off completely in System Settings. If the transparent menu bar is the part that bothers you, Black Menu Bar ($0.99) makes the menu bar solid black on macOS 26 and macOS 27 and never touches your wallpaper — no replacing, repainting or copying it, so dynamic, shuffling and per-Space wallpapers keep working. For the whole system, the closest setting is Reduce transparency in System Settings → Accessibility → Display, which replaces transparent backgrounds with solid ones across the system — the menu bar, the Dock, Control Center and other panels. For a lighter touch, System Settings → Appearance → Liquid Glass sets the glass to Clear or Tinted on macOS 26, or along a slider from clear to the heaviest tint on macOS 27. Increase contrast, in the same Display pane, adds stronger borders.

The three settings that tone Liquid Glass down

SettingWhereWhat it changesSide effects
Reduce transparencySystem Settings → Accessibility → DisplayReplaces the transparent effect on backgrounds with a solid oneSystem-wide: the menu bar, the Dock, Control Center and other panels all lose their see-through look
Liquid Glass: Clear or Tinted (macOS 26), slider (macOS 27)System Settings → AppearanceHow clear or how tinted the glass looksKeeps the Liquid Glass design; a matter of degree, not an off switch

Turn on Reduce transparency

Apple describes the setting as replacing the transparent effect on some backgrounds with a solid background, to improve contrast. It is the setting most guides mean when they say to turn off Liquid Glass, and it is all or nothing: there is no way to keep the glass in one place, such as the Dock, and remove it in another.

  1. 1

Open System Settings → Accessibility. Choose Apple menu → System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar.

  2. 2

Click Display. It is in the Vision group of the Accessibility settings.

  3. 3

Turn on Reduce transparency. The change applies right away. Turn it off the same way to get the glass look back.

Adjust the Liquid Glass setting

On macOS 26 Tahoe, open System Settings → Appearance and set Liquid Glass to Tinted instead of Clear. On macOS 27, the same row is a slider: all the way to the left for clear, all the way to the right for the heaviest tint, or anywhere in between.

On macOS 27 the Appearance settings also warn that adjusting Liquid Glass while Reduce transparency is on may turn Reduce transparency off. If you use both, set the slider first and check Reduce transparency afterwards.

Increase contrast

System Settings → Accessibility → Display → Increase contrast increases the contrast of items on the screen, such as borders around buttons or boxes. It does not remove transparency by itself; it makes the edges of controls easier to see.

Want a solid black menu bar? Black Menu Bar on macOS 26 and 27

Since macOS 26 the menu bar has no background by default, and for many people that is the part of Liquid Glass they want gone. Reduce transparency fixes it by changing the whole interface; painting a band into the wallpaper fixes it by changing your wallpaper. Black Menu Bar does neither.

It works on macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27 Golden Gate, and it never touches your wallpaper: no replacing, no repainting, no copying. It makes the menu bar solid black, and your dynamic wallpaper keeps changing, your shuffling collection keeps shuffling, and each Space keeps its own picture — while the Dock, sidebars and the rest of Liquid Glass stay as Apple designed them.

  • On a MacBook the camera housing blends into the black bar.
  • The built-in alternative for the menu bar alone: System Settings → Menu Bar → Show menu bar background puts Apple's translucent bar back behind the menu items, with no color choice.

FAQ

Can you turn off Liquid Glass on a Mac?

Not completely, with any setting in System Settings. Reduce transparency in System Settings → Accessibility → Display removes most of the see-through effect across the system, and the Liquid Glass setting in System Settings → Appearance makes the glass tinted instead of clear. For a solid black bar, Black Menu Bar does it without touching your wallpaper, on macOS 26 and macOS 27.

How do I make Liquid Glass less transparent on macOS 27?

Open System Settings → Appearance and drag the Liquid Glass slider to the right, toward the heaviest tint. For solid backgrounds everywhere, turn on Reduce transparency in System Settings → Accessibility → Display. For a solid black menu bar that leaves the rest of Liquid Glass as it is, Black Menu Bar does it without touching your wallpaper, on macOS 26 and macOS 27.

What does Reduce transparency do on a Mac?

It replaces the transparent effect used on some backgrounds in macOS with a solid background, to improve contrast. On macOS 26 and 27 that includes the menu bar, the Dock and Control Center. It is a single system-wide switch.

Does Reduce transparency save battery on a Mac?

Apple presents Reduce transparency as a contrast and readability setting in Accessibility and does not document any effect on battery life. Turn it on for how the Mac looks, not to save power.

Can I keep Liquid Glass but make the menu bar solid?

Yes. Use Black Menu Bar: it makes the menu bar solid black and leaves the rest of Liquid Glass as Apple designed it, works on macOS 26 and macOS 27, and never touches your wallpaper — no replacing, repainting or copying it — so dynamic, shuffling and per-Space wallpapers keep working. Built in, System Settings → Menu Bar → Show menu bar background gives Apple's translucent bar instead.
